How to Repot Your Houseplants

repot houseplants

Introduction

Now is a great time to repot your houseplants! Spring through early summer is the ideal time, as plants are actively growing and will recover quickly. The longer daylight hours and increased warmth help new roots establish faster, making it easier for your plant to adjust. But when exactly should you repot, and how should you go about it? Let’s dig in.

When to Repot Your Plant

You don’t need to repot your plant as soon as you bring it home. Let it settle into its new environment before making any changes. On average, houseplants should be repotted every one to two years, depending on their growth rate and size.

Common Signs to Repot

  • It needs more water than usual. If your plant is drying out quickly and needs water multiple times a week, its roots may have outgrown the potting mix.
  • It’s sinking in the pot. Over time, soil breaks down and compacts, causing your plant to sit lower in the container and reducing drainage and root space.
  • Roots are growing out of the drainage holes. If you notice roots poking out from the bottom of the pot or circling the inside, it’s a sign your plant needs more room.

  • Water drains too quickly. If water rushes through the pot without being absorbed, the roots may have taken up too much space, leaving little soil to retain moisture.
  • The plant looks top-heavy. If your plant is tipping over or appears too large for its container, it’s likely time for a bigger pot.

However, not all plants need frequent repotting. Some, like monsteras, prefer slightly constricted roots and can thrive in the same pot for years.

Choosing the Right Pot and Soil

When selecting a new pot, size matters. Increase the pot size by just one to two inches in diameter. A pot that’s too large retains excess moisture, increasing the risk of root rot and stunted growth. Drainage holes are a must to prevent water from sitting at the bottom and causing damage. Terra cotta, plastic, and ceramic pots are all great options.

Even if your plant doesn’t need a larger pot, refreshing the soil can provide a nutrient boost. Over time, the nutrients in potting soil deplete, so fresh soil helps keep plants healthy. A well-draining mix containing bark, charcoal, and perlite balances moisture retention and aeration. A blend of 50% orchid potting mix and 50% regular potting soil works well for most houseplants.

How to Repot Your Plant

Once you’ve chosen the right pot and soil, follow these steps:

  • Remove the plant from its pot. If it’s stuck, run a knife along the inside edge to loosen the roots.
  • Shake off excess soil and trim any dead or damaged roots. If roots are circling the pot, gently loosen them.
  • Add a fresh layer of potting mix to the bottom of the new container.
  • Place the plant in the new pot and fill around it with soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets.

  • Water thoroughly and let any excess water drain out.
  • Position your plant in a well-lit area to help it adjust to its new home.

Conclusion

Repotting might seem intimidating, but with the right approach, it’s a simple way to support your plant’s health.
