Your Pre-Season Workout In The Garden
Pre-Season Workout In The Garden
February can be a very iffy month weather-wise. If the weather is decent, get out there and do a little work in the garden. Like the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Is Richmond enjoying a stretch of a couple days with temperatures above 45 degrees? Spray dormant or horticultural oil on your evergreens, shrubs and perennials. This oil spray will help prevent insect eggs from hatching once springtime gets here.
Pick up all those sticks, limbs, branches and trash that has blown into your yard on those windy days. Did your neighbors not rake their leaves and now they’re all in your garden? Leave them alone. Brown leaves make some of the best soil conditioner, and they act as a barrier against cold damage when packed around plants.
It’s never too early to apply a weed preventer to your garden beds. Strange’s carries both a chemical preventer and an organic one. Both of these products break down to form a barrier that prevents weed seed from germinating in the spring.
February is National Birdfeeding Month. Be sure to keep our feathered friends well-fed!
Did you plant pansies last fall? Remember to feed them once a month with fertilome Bedding Plant Food for pansies. This will help them survive the rest of the winter and into spring (when it finally gets here!)
