Planting Bulbs This Fall is the easiest way to have Spring Blooms!
Tulips, Hyacinths and Daffodils!
Nothing brings spring to mind like the thought of these blooming in your yard. Bulbs are so easy to plant, even here in Richmond’s varieties of soil. All you need is a bright, sunny spot with soil that drains. Our bulbs come with simple instructions that tell you how deep to plant them, and how big they’ll grow.
You’re not limited to just tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. We also have Crocus, Iris, Peonies, Scillas, Muscari, and Alliums, to name a few more. With just a few easy steps, and a little effort this fall, you can have a gorgeous garden next spring.
Keys to Bulb Success:
1. Figure out where you want to put your bulbs. Remember, sun is good. What might be a shady area now, might be full sun in the spring. Look up and see if you have trees that will be bare in April.
2. Dig your holes. Bulbs look best clustered in groups, instead of in single-file rows.
3. Pointy end up! This is how almost all bulbs go in the ground. If you can’t decide which is the pointy end, put the bulb sideways. It will find it’s way up.
4. Add Espoma Bulb-tone before you fill in your hole. Put the dirt back in the hole, tamp it down lightly and water well. If we have a dry winter, we advise watering bulb plantings (and all plants) every so often, to help keep them from drying out in the winter wind.
5. Put a layer of mulch, no deeper than 1” deep, over your bulb plantings. This will help keep them warm, and protect them from some of the worst winter weather.
If voles are a problem in your garden, or you have animal issues, we have classes throughout the Fall and Spring on best mitigation practices. Stay tuned for blog posts too!
