3 Best Ways to Preserve Your Pumpkins
3 Best Ways to Preserve Your Pumpkins
By, Caroline Martin
You work very hard to create the most creative pumpkin carving and within a week, your pumpkin starts to droop or mold! What can you do to prevent this from happening this year? Here are a few ways proven to preserve your pumpkin for longer so that you can enjoy it further into the Fall!
1. Bleach Soak
Using Bleach is a great way to keep the mold away from your pumpkin and help it to stay looking fresh longer. First, fill a bucket or container with water and add one teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water. Make sure to fill the container with enough bleach/water mixture to cover the entire pumpkin. It will try to float, so be sure to keep it submerged.
Soak for 2-8 hours, remove and pat dry. The more moisture you can wipe from the pumpkin, the better off it will be (mold comes from excess moisture).
Once your pumpkin is on display, spray it everyday with a mixture of bleach and water. You can use a plant spritzer or small spray bottle for this. Remove any excess moisture with a towel.
2. Silica Gel Packets
Who doesn’t have a few of these laying around from past purchases? Silica packets are designed to keep moisture out of products, so why wouldn’t they work just as well at keeping mold and moisture away from pumpkins?
Open the packet of silica gel and insert the beads into the inside of the carved pumpkin. You can push them into the meat slightly so they don’t move around and are more effective at capturing the moisture.
3. Pumpkin Preservative
There are a few different pumpkin preservatives out there but one of the most well-known is Pumpkin Fresh. The solution comes in a small spray bottle and is made of ingredients that fight fungus. Spray onto the outside and in the inside of your pumpkin everyday after carving. Pumpkin Fresh should keep your “pumpkin fresh” for up to 14 days!
